Banzai Pipeline (Ehukai Beach Park)

During the Winter season (Nov-Feb) Banzai Pipeline is world renowned for its surfing with waves reaching up to 20 feet. Only experienced surfers are advised to try and surf these dangerous waves. For on-lookers it can be an exciting and fullfilling experience to watch from the beach. Pipeline is home to the Billabong Pipeline Masters, the final leg of the Triple Crown of Surfing.  During the Summer months (May-Sept) waves are much smaller at 1 to 2 feet and it is much safer to swim. Banzai Pipeline is a must for any vistor to the North Shore to experience.

Pu'u O Mahuka Heiau

Picture
Perched on a bluff high above Waimea is the largest heiau (religious site or temple) on the Island of Oahu, covering almost two acres.  The name is translated as "hill of escape."  Undoubtedly, this heiau played an important role in the social, political and religious system of Waimea Valley which was a major occupation center of Oahu in the pre-contract period.

Waimea Bay

During the winter season Waimea Bay is known for its surfing and extremely large waves. However during the summer months this can be a wonderful location to snorkel or swim in the beautiful clear waters. To the left of the beach there is a large rock that you can watch people jump off of for fun, sometimes belly flops can be heard for miles! This beach is also a great place to just enjoy aloha life and bask in the hawaiian sun. Whether you are a thrill seeker or just like to relax or swim, Waimea Bay offers a little bit of both worlds.

Waimea Valley

Picture
One of last partially intact ahupua‘a on O`ahu, Waimea Valley consists of 1,875 acres and has been a sacred place for more than 700 years of Native Hawaiian history.  Waimea, “The Valley of the Priests,” gained its title around 1090 when the ruler of O‘ahu awarded the land to the kähuna nui.  Descendants of the high priests lived and cared for much of the Valley until 1886.  Waihï is the Valley’s 45-foot waterfall, approximately a paved 3/4 of a mile walk from the park entrance booth.  Ku‘ono Waiwai, the Valley’s retail store, showcases the work of North Shore artists and Hawaii crafters of locally made products.

Laniakea (Turtle Beach)

Almost always can you find turtles on Laniakea Beach basking in the sun. They lay on the beach with no care in the world as visitors watch at a distance in awe. Honu guardian volunteers are on the beach every day to protect this endangered species offering briefings about the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle. As it may be tempting to touch or handle these magnificant creatures, it is against Hawaii State Law. Swimming is also allowed at this beach and the turtles in the water are very friendly. However, keeping a respectful distance from these creatures is important to maintain a heathy habitat.

Hale'iwa Town

This laid back surf town is the hub of the North Shore offering restaurants, art galleries, boutiques, and surf shops.  Shops are housed in plantation-era buildings for a more hawaiian style vibe. Don't be suprised if local shop owners are closed due to good surf conditions. Famous for their shave ice, Matsumoto's and Aoki's are a must after a day at the beach.
